In case you haven't noticed, this post is more than a year old and I have switched over to Disqus for my comments and they use nofollow. So I no longer give out nofollow links to anyone, not even the older comments that used to be dofollow.

And now I have the power to edit too, so I can take out the spammy links, if the comment is otherwise good except for that.

This is a great site you have setup here. It is very difficult finding any blogs that are dofollow now. The majority of them got shut down due to so much spam from all those sites promoting the pills and etc..

I could see people taking advantage of do follow blogs without adding any real value to the blog. I have near 20 sites that are do follow and see all kinds of crap but for the most part, good comments.

I agree with you 100% that if someone leave a poor comment on my site, I either won’t publish it or leave them a poor comment as well. John Chow’s post is definitely interesting but I am not sure if I agree with leaving comment at your own site. If you do this frequently, it becomes obvious that you are the one that commenting at your blog and it doesn’t look good. A better way is to join yahoo or msn groups within your niche and network with people

I don't always answer every comment made on my blog, since sometimes there are those that don't warrant an answer. But when a commenter leaves some sort of way to follow them back to their blog, I'll go out of my way to find something to comment on there.

Great idea. I've always answered every comment and visit the blogs and usually end up leaving a comment; however, I never wrote about it or made it a "policy". Great idea.

My latest post was on my belief in dofollow and link-love - the more we share the more we all benefit.

You remind me so much of me :-) I tend to do exactly what you do. I spend more time commenting on other people's blog than I do on my own blog.

I also suffer from verbal diarrhoea, that is I cannot for the life of me write short posts :-(

Anyways, I'm loving your ethos to sharing the comment love. I notice that you've been a blogger since 2002, so I bet you've got some fantastic advice on the world of blogging

I have same issues on my forum, 50+ members and only really me, April and the occasional other post. The reason i keep posting, is 4 fold:

#1 As mouser said, posting for myself, i kinda like it.

#2 Sooner or later others will post, at least, thats the theory.

#3 There are plenty of thread views, meaning people are at least visiting and reading if not posting, getting them there is half the battle, posting is likely to break out at some point!

#4 The more you post the more gets indexed the more draw there is for people to find the site, and hopefully, post, this is the forum snowball effect, once you get it started.........

I will over the next few weeks, add some bait to the site, giving people a real reason to register at the forum, and i will also create several new forum areas, this will increase the broad appeal.

With regard to blogs, i have rarely posted on blogs, but i am going to continue to visit this one, as April usually has something interesting to say.

My target isn't the typical silent reader though...it's bloggers just like me, that want comments on their blogs just as much as I want them on mine.

If they leave a quality comment, they will not only get one from me on their blog, but my other readers will see theirs on here and the blogger will gain from that too, when my readers click through to their blog just to find out more about the guy that left a great comment. (I see it in my stats that I get a lot of visitors from comments I have left on other blogs)

If bloggers commented on 25% of the blogs they read, they would get it back a million percent, and the entire blogging community would benefit, and casual non-blogger readers that never will comment would benefit by getting more interesting stuff to read, as well.

sometimes i think there are only two viable approaches to writing blogs.. one is if you just say F it and don't ever worry about getting readers, and mainly just write for yourself, and pretend in your mind you have millions of viewers and try to not even look at the hit counts, etc. and the other way is to actively try to get readers and engage them, which can sometimes seem like a very frustrating process. surely there must be some good middle ground approaches but that's just my gut level feeling. im not sure which approach is better. my experience with DC is that if you want participation you have to really work at encouraging it until it reaches some threshold of participans and then it mostly becomes automatic.. but until that threshold of participation is reached no one really wants to be the only one talking.

mouser, as an admin of a large forum with a lot of silent members, you have faced a similar problem with trying to figure out how to get members to participate and communicate more, and not just sit back in silence.

There is an issue in the blogging community with too many bloggers not remembering that a vital component of blogging is communication.

Bloggers read a lot more posts every day than they make on their own blogs, but they don't comment very often, or when they do it's a crappy comment just to take advantage of having a link to their blog on another site for SEO purposes.

This leaves the vast majority of blogs on the web with very few quality comments and too many bloggers feeling or looking like they are talking to themselves.

If bloggers commented on at least 25% of the posts they read, this wouldn't be an issue and there would be plenty of quality comments to go around and nobody would have to resort to tricks like this or begging to get people to communicate.

I don't think a single special day will change the attitudes and habits of bloggers to get them to comment more.

I am hoping more bloggers will take this idea I presented and use it on their own blogs, and by posting this that it creates a commenting wave across the blogosphere, so that over time the need for anyone to have a commenting policy like this would become unnecessary.
